P3.1 Flashcards
how does a Van de Graaff generator work?
charge builds up in the dome because:
-the belt rubs against the roller creating friction
-the belt carries the charge onto the metal dome
-sparks are produced when the dome can’t hold anymore charge
current
the rate of flow of charge
what is the direction of current?
from positive to negative
what is the equation for charge?
charge = current x time
what is charge measured in?
coulombs
what is current measured in?
Amps
why do atoms not have an overall charge?
the atoms has the same number of protons and electrons, the positive charge of the proton cancels out the negative charge of the electrons, the neutrons have no charge so the overall charge is zero
static elctricity
-charging by rubbing
-when you rub objects the negative electrons move from one electron to another, electrons are not lost during this movement
-this leaves behind a positively charged object as well as the negatively charged object that took extra electrons
what do you need for electrical charge to create current?
-a complete circuit
-a cell or battery to push the charge around
