P3 - Particle Model of Matter Flashcards
What is the particle arrangement of a dense object?
Particles packed closely together
What is Internal Energy?
The energy stored by the particles that make up a system
What happens to mass during a state change?
Mass is always conserved
What is Specific Latent Heat?
The energy needed to change the state of 1kg of a substance
What is Specific Latent Heat of Fusion?
The specific latent heat for the changing between a solid and a liquid (melting or freezing)
What is Specific Latent Heat of Vaporisation?
The specific latent heat for the changing between a liquid and a gas (evaporation or condensation)
Why does increasing heat of a gas increase pressure?
Increased heat causes increased kinetic energy. This causes more frequent collisions. This means that the gas particles hit the side of their container more, increasing pressure
Why does increasing volume decrease pressure?
Increased volume increases distance between particles. This leads to less frequent collisions. This means that the gas particle hit the side of their container less, decreasing pressure
Why do objects not crush under pressure?
Internal pressure equals external pressure, meaning net pressure equals 0.
Why does doing work against a gas increase it’s temperature?
You are transferring energy by applying a force
