P3 - Particle Mode of Matter Flashcards
What are the three states of matter.
Solid , Liquid , Gas
Describe how particles are arranged in each state of matter.
Solid: Close packed , strong forces , regular fixed pattern , they vibrate , not much energy
Liquid : Close together , irregular pattern , more energy than solids , move past each other in random directions at slow speed
Gas: not touching , no forces , loads of energy , constantly moving at different speeds
True or false ? The colder a gas , the higher the average energy in the kinetic energy stores of its particles.
False - Hotter gas
What’s the formula for density ?
density (kg/m3) - mass (kg) / volume (m3)
True or false ? solids are usually denser than gases.
True
Describe how you find the volume of a irregular shape object.
measure its mass
Fill a eureka can with water
place a measuring cylinder under the spout
put object in and measure the volume of water in the cylinder
this is = to the object’s volume
What is internal energy?
Is the total energy stored by particles in a system
