P3 Flashcards
What is specific latent heat
The amount of energy required to change the state of one KG of a substance with no change in temperature
What is Specific heat capacity
The amount of energy to raise the temperature of 1KG of a substance by 1 degree Celsius
Equation for specific heat capacity
Change in thermal energy
——————————————————
Mass X. Temperature change
Name the apparatus used in the specific heat capacity practical
Beaker
Balance- scale
Insulating foam
Immersive heater
Joule meter
Thermometer
Power pack
Explain the specific heat capacity practicle
⭐️Place beaker on a balance and press zero
⭐️Add oil and record mass and temp of oil
⭐️Wrap beaker in insulating foam
⭐️Connect immersion heater
⭐️Connect joulemeter and power pack to immersion heater
⭐️Leave for about 30 min
⭐️Read the amount of joule energy transferred from the immersion heater to the oil
⭐️Record final temperature
Name two sources of inaccuracy and its solutions in the specific heat capacity practical
Thermal energy passing out of the beaker into the air
SOLUTION- use insulator with a low thermal conductivity
Thermal energy may not be spread throughout the oil
SOLUTION: stir the oil
what is the equation for density
Density = mass
