P3 Flashcards
How does biofuel produce energy
Is generated by direct combustion (burning biomass in too much air). It is then burned in a boiler to produce steam and the steam rotates turbines that drive a generator that produce energy. Types of biomass are food waste, manure, methane gas and etc, so it utilises many waste products making them useful.
Where are biofuel plants built
It’s mostly made in places that are agricultral and it can even make biodisel for cars. Firstly you have to grow the food before even starting and then send it to the direct combustion plant to be processed
Is biofuel renewable
Yes but only if it is grown at a faster rate than it is burned. So it’s energy made is reliant on wether there is lots of food and waste.
Name 2 advantages of biofuel
Renewable and makes the most out of waste like manure and food waste
What are the disadvantages of biofuels
Takes up a lot of land and if there isn’t enough food being produced then it won’t have any fuel
How does nuclear power produce energy
Uranium is split creating lots of heat and energy. This heats up water and is put into a pressuriser, so that it cannot turn into a gas. This water heats up other water and turns into steam that turns a generator
Where are nuclear power stations built
Near large bodies of water and an area of low population
Is nuclear power renewable
No because uranium and plutonium will eventually run out
Give an advantage of nuclear power
Kills less than fossil fuels
Give an disadvantage of nuclear power
It is very hard to dispose of depleted uranium
How do fossil fuels produce electricity?
When fossil fuels are burnt it releases lots of energy
Name 2 advantages of fossil fuels
A great option for developing countries and cheap
Name, two disadvantages of fossil fuels
Will run out soon and releases lots of greenhouse gases
How do geothermal plants produce electricity?
It pumps water underground into the earth’s crust, and this water turns into steam that turns a turbine
Where geothermal plants normally made
In the ring of fire, and in areas where there are holes in the crust of the Earth
