P2b Topic 4 - Momentum, Energy, Work and Power Flashcards
Braking distance is affected by 4 main factors
A. How fast you’re going.
B. The mass of your vehicle.
C. How good your breaks are.
D. How good the grip is.
Momentum (kg m/s) =
Mass (kg) TIMES BY Velocity (m/s)
Momentum before =
Momentum after
Force (N) =
Change in momentum (kg m/s) DIVIDED BY time
When a force moves an object,
Energy is transferred and work is done
Crumple zones crumple on impact,
Increasing the time taken for the car to stop.
Seat belts stretch slightly,
Increasing the time taken for the wearer to stop. This reduces the force acting on the chest.
Air bags
Slow you down more gradually.
Work done =
Force TIMES distance moved in the direction of the force
Power=
Work done DIVIDED BY time taken
Kinetic energy =
1/2 TIMES mass TIMES velocity SQUARED
Initial kinetic energy=
Work done by breaks to stop vehicle
Gravitational potential energy =
Mass TIMES gravitational field strength TIMES height
Energy can never be created nor destroyed
- only transferred from one form to another.
Kinetic energy gained =
Gravitational potential energy lost
