P2.2.8 - Work, Energy and Machines Flashcards
What is ‘work’ in physics?
Work is a method of transferring energy by using forces e.g. working against gravity or friction.
When you lift a book what type of work are you doing?
You are working against gravity.
When you slide a book along a table, what type of work are you doing?
You are working against friction.
What is the equation for calculating work done?
Work done (J) = Force (N) x Distance moved (m)
What is the function of a ‘simple machine’?
To make it easier to lift, move or turn things by reducing the force needed to do the work.
Give 2 examples of ‘simple machines’ used to make work easier.
Levers for lifting
Gears for turning
A small force acting over a big distace produces a ____________
Big force
