P2 part 1 Flashcards
What is the definition of a force?
A push or a pull action that has direction
What are balanced forces?
When the forces are equal
When do balanced forces occur?
When an object isn’t moving
What are unbalanced forces?
When the forces aren’t balanced
When do unbalanced forces occur?
When objects accelerate or decelerate
What is Newton’s third law of motion?
Every action has an equal opposite reaction
What is resultant force?
When 2 or more forces work together, they add up to a resultant force. It means what the force is.
What 3 things can resultant forces do?
- Change the speed of an object 2. change the direction of an object 3. change of shape of an object
In a moving object, when the forces are balanced, describe what happens to the object
It continues moving at a steady pace in a straight line
In a moving object, when the forces are unbalanced, describe what happens to the object
Accelerates in the direction of the force (this could mean slowing down if the force opposes the motion)
In a stationary object, when the forces are balanced, describe what happens to the object
Remains stationary
In a Stationary object, when the forces are unbalanced, describe what happens to the object
It starts moving either accelerates or decelerates
What is Newtons Second law
Resultant force = mass x acceleration
What is velocity?
Speed and direction
What is speed?
How fast something is moving
Which axis do the independent variable go on?
x axis
Which axis do the dependent variable go on?
y axis
What is acceleration?
The rate of change of velocity in an object
What is the equation for acceleration?
acceleration = change in velocity/time taken
What is thinking distance?
The distance you travel whilst you are thinking about stopping when you see the stop sign
What is braking distance?
The distance travelled by the car whilst the brakes are on.
How is total stopping distance calculated?
Thinking distance + Braking distance
What factors can increase thinking distance?
Foggy, Rainy, Tiredness/drug use/alcohol
What factors can increase braking distance?
speed, windy roads, number of people in car, luggage
To find the distance travelled, you need to find the area under the graph. How do you do this?
Try and fit the area under the graph into shapes, find all the areas of those shapes and add them together.
Name 3 ways to increase the drag of an object?
Increase surface area, Increase weight, Change materials
What is air resistance caused by?
Moving particles pushing air out of the way
What does aerodynamic mean?
Having a shape which reduces the drag from air moving past.
What is mass and how is it measured?
How much matter makes up an object. Kilograms
