Social Function
Art that fulfills and satisfy man’s needs. It is crafted to serve some purpose.
Physical Function
It is used for dance & religion. People composed hymns of love to express feelings & emotions.
Music
Does art always have to be functional?
The value of art doesn’t depend on function but the work itself.
Art as an Imitation
According to Plato, artists are imitators & art is just a mere imitation.
The things in the world are only copies of the original

Why was Plato deeply suspicious of arts & artists?
- They appeal to the emotion rather to the rational faculty of men
- They imitate rather than lead one to reality.
Art as a Reflection of Society
According to Aristotle, Art doesn’t aim to represent reality but to provide a vision of what might be or the many possibilities of reality.
Art as Disinterested Judgement
Immanuel Kant considered the judgement of beauty, the cornerstone of art, as something that can be universal despite its subjectivity.
Art as a Communication of Emotion
According to Leo Tolstoy, art serves as a language; a communication device that articulates feelings & emotions that are otherwise unavailable to the audience.
