What does a straight line on a graph tell us?
The variables are proportional to each other
What does a straight line through the origin tell us?
The variables are directly proportional to each other
What is Hooke’s Law?
The extension of a material is directly proportional to the force applied
What is the equation for hooke’s law?
F=kx
Where f is force, k is the spring constant and x is the extension
What is a moment?
A turning effect on an object around a pivot point
What is the equation for working out a moment?
Moment = force x distance between pivot and line of action of force
What is the principle of moments?
When an object is in equilibrium (no resultant force or moment) the sum of the anti-clockwise moments = the sum of the clockwise moments
What is the equation for mechanical advantage?
Mechanical advantage = load/ effort
What is the equation for mechanical advantage concerning diameters of gears?
MA = diameter of driven gear/diameter of driver gear
What is the equation for mechanical advantage concerning number of teeth on a gear?
MA = number of teeth on driven gear/number of teeth on driver gear
What is the equation for pressure?
Pressure = force perpendicular to a surface/area of the surface in contact
What are moments measured in?
Nm- Newton mètres
