P2 - Energy Resources Flashcards
What are the non-renewable on Earth?
Fossil fuels:
Gas, coal and oil
Nuclear:
Plutonium, uranium
What is the main advantage of non-renewable energy sources?
They can adjust to energy to demands.
What is the main disadvantage of non-renewable energy sources?
They damage the environment (CO2 build up and sulfer dioxide being released causing acid rain)
Can produce nuclear waste
What is the main advantage of renewable energy sources?
They don’t run out
They do much less environment damage
What is the main disadvantage of renewable energy sources?
Not constant energy/Not reliables/ weather dependant.
State two renewable energy sources.
Solar, wind, hydro-electric, tidal, bio fuels.
Advantages of solar.
Free electricity
Almost 0 running cost
No pollution while generating electricity
Disadvantage of solar.
Relatively small scale supply
Most suitable for sunny countries but can be used in cloudy countries as well.
Reliant on sun
Advantages of biofuels.
Can be waste matter e.g animal waste, wheat stems.
Carbon neutral (Carbon released is reabsorbed by pants grown)
Fairly relabel if stock piled.
Disadvantages of biofuel.
Can be expensive (plants grown specifically for burning). Over production of biofuel means less food for humans.
Loss of habitats and species.
When it decays it release methane
Advantages of Hydro-electric.
Immediately responsive
Running cost are minimal
A reliable energy source.
Disadvantage of hydro-electric
Big environment impact
Initial build cost are often high
Advantages of tidal barrages.
No pollution
Reliable
Doesn’t work when the water is level on both sides.
Disadvantage of tidal barrages
Restricts boat access
Spoils the view
Can alter habitats
Give one advantage and one disadvantage of using solar power.
Advantage: free energy
Disadvantage: reliant on day light
