P2 - Chemical Analysis Flashcards
Define a pure substance
Something that contains one compound or element - not mixed with anything else
What are the two phases of chromatography?
Mobile - where the molecules can move (solvent)
Stationary - where the molecules can’t move (chromatography paper)
How do you calculate the Rf value?
Distance travelled by substance
———————————
Distance travelled by solvent
What is the test for chlorine?
Bleached damp litmus paper
What is the test for oxygen?
Relights a glowing splint
What is the test for carbon dioxide?
Turns limewater cloudy
What is the test for hydrogen?
Burns with a squeaky pop
What is the test for carbonates?
Add dilute acid to it in a test tube then connect with test tube of limewater to see if carbon dioxide is present
What is the test for sulfates?
Add dilute HCl and then barium chloride solution to it and white precipitate forms.
What is the test for halides?
Add dilute nitric acid and silver nitrate solution and a white/cream/yellow precipitate will form depending on which halide it is.
What are the colours of the flame tests?
Lithium, sodium, potassium, calcium, copper
Lithium - red Sodium - yellow Potassium - purple Calcium - Orange-red Copper - green
What colour precipitates do metal hydroxides form when sodium hydroxide is added to them?
Calcium, copper, Iron(II), Iron(III), Aluminium, Magnesium
Calcium - white Copper - blue Iron(II) - green Iron(III) - Brown Aluminium - white then colourless Magnesium - white
