P2 Flashcards
Why do things conduct heat
Because the heat starts to vibrate particles inside the material which then vibrate particles near it which then vibrate more particles
Why does heat transmit through metal but not through wood
In metal the atoms are more closely packed together
What is infared radiation
A type of electromagnetic wave that transfers heat energy
What is a black body
Its a perfect absorber and emmiter as it doesn’t reflect or transmit any radiation
What is better at reflecting light dull matte surfaces or shiny light surfaces
Shiny light surfaces
What is specific heat capacity
The property of a material that determines how much energy is required to raise the temperature of 1kg of the material by 1 degree
How do you calculate energy with mass specific heat capacity and change in temp
Energy=massXspecific heat capacityXchange in temperature
What are some ways to reduce heat loss from a house
Carpets,Filling wall cavities,loft insulation,double glazing
What is conduction
The process where vibrating particles transfer energy to the neighbouring particles
What is convection
When particles move away from hotter to cooler regions
