P1.4.1 Generating Electricity Flashcards
Renewable energy sources:
Renewable energy sources like wind, waves and solar energy will not run out.
Wind power- lots of little wind turbines
Solar cells-expensive but no environmental damage
Hydroelectric power uses falling water
Pumped storage gives extra supply just when it needed
Wave power- lots of little wave-powered turbines
Tidal barrages- using the sun and moons gravity
Geothermal energy- heat from underground
Biofuels are made from the plants and waste
Energy sources and the environment:
Non renewable are also linked to the environmental problems
Biofuels have their disadvantages too
Carbon capture can reduce the impact of Co2
Comparison of energy resources:
Setting up a power station - Costs Reliability Environmental issues Decommissioning time Running/ fuel costs Location issues
Energy sources and power stations:
Non-renewable energy resources will run out one day
The non renewables are the three fossil fuels and nuclear: Coal Oil Natural gas Nuclear fuels
Renewable energy resources will never run out.
The renewables are: Wind Waves Tides Hydroelectric Solar Geothermal Food Biofuels
