P14 electromagmetism Flashcards
magnetic materials
iron(steel)
cobalt
nickel
what does a magnetic field do and what is it?
it is the region around a magnet where a force acts on another magnet or on a magnetic material.
where do magnetic fields start and finish
start at the north pole and finish at the south pole
where is the magnetic field strong
at the poles is strongest
when the field lines are close together
when is the magnetic field weak
when the lines are further apart from each other and from the magnet.
as the distance from the magnet increases the field gets weaker
how do you know that the earth has a magnetic field
compass proves it. the small bar magnet that can rotate. the needle always settles along a north-south direction.
what are permanent magnets
produces its own magnetic field. always have a north and south pole
how can you check if a magnet is a permanent one
by placing it near another one. If they are both permament they will repel and attract
what is an induced magnet
it becomes magnetic when it is placed in a magnetic field. they are temporary magnets
induced magnets are always attracted to…
a permanent magnet because it is magnetised in the direction of the permanent magnet’s field.
features of magentuc fields
lines point north to south
strenght decreases with distance fro the lines
