P1.4 Flashcards
Name three fossil fuels?
Coal, oil and natural gas.
What happens in most power stations?
Water heated to produce steam, steam drives turbine, which is coupled to an electrical generator that produces electricity.
What happens in nuclear power stations?
Uranium/ plutonium used as fuel. The nucleus of their atom undergoes nuclear fission. Which releases energy. There are lots of nuclei, so lots of fission occurs, releasing lots of energy to heat water, turning it into steam.
What does a wind turbine do?
A wind turbine is an electricity generator on top of a tall tower. Wind passing over blades= rotate and drive the generator.
Energy from waves?
Generate electricity by turning a floating generator. (Which is delivered to grid system on shore by cable).
Energy from hydroelectricity?
Generators turned by water running down hill.
Energy from tidal power?
Traps each high tide and uses it to turn generators.
