P1.3 Flashcards
ASDADAS
why do gases exert pressure?
when there is a lot of air within a confined space, the particles inside the air collide with one another and this produces an outward force on the thing that is holding it such as a balloon or a container. This is pressure. If you add more air particles to a container that cannot expand, the pressure increases
How does temperature affect gas pressure?
If the temperature increases, the gas particles move around and collide more due to an increase in energy from the higher temperature. They collide more frequently with the container and so more pressure is produced
Measuring Pressure
You can measure pressure by the use of a pressure gauge. Pressure of a gas is measured in pascals (Pa)
Pascals
One pascal equals one newton per square meter (1N/m^2). Sometimes it will be in kilopascals (kPa). 1kPa = 1000Pa
Temperature and pressure correlation
As the temperature decreases, as does the pressure
Absolute Zero
If you continued cooling a gas then the pressure would reach 0 Pa at -237.14C. This is 0K (Kelvin). We cannot reach absolute 0 but can work out the value by extrapolating.
