P1.3 Flashcards
What is displacement
Shortest distance from point a to b
Formula for speed
Distance M / time S
What is a vector quantity
A measurement with a magnitude (size) and direction
What do these show in a distance time graph Horizontal line Straight sloping line Steepness of the line Length of line Curve?
Horizontal means object is stationary.
Straight slope means constant speed
Gradient of line can be used to work out speed
Curve means acceleration
Acceleration formula
Change in velocity / time S. can be a negative figure
How can you work out distance travelled in a velocity time graph
Distance travelled = area under the line
What is a force
A push or pull vector quantity
What are action reaction forces
When something applies a force (action) to an object, the object applies and equal size opposite direction reaction force onto that thing.
What is the resultant force
The force of two opposite direction forces added together. E.g. 75N forwards and 25N backwards, resultant force is 50N forwards
What happens if a resultant force is 0 or has a value
If 0, object will continue at a constant velocity, if stationary it will stay stationary. If resultant force has a value, object will accelerate in direction of resultant force
What does acceleration on an object depend on
Size of resultant force and direction
Mass of the object
Formula for force needed to accelerate an object
Force = mass * acceleration
What is mass
The quantity of matter in a object
What is weight
The force applied by gravity in an object
What is gravitational field strength
Measurement of how much force gravity of an object applies to another object
