P12 Waves Flashcards
Transverse waves
are when the movement of the wave is perpendicular to the direction of travel of the wave
Longitudinal waves
are when the movement is parallel to the direction of travel of the wave.
Mechanical wave
Mechanical waves are waves that require a medium in order to transfer energy away from their source
Electromagnetic
are waves that are created as a result of vibrations between an electric field and a magnetic field.
Frequency
the rate at which something occurs over a particular period of time or in a given sample
Peak
the highest point above the rest position
Trough
the lowest point below the rest position.
Amplitude
the maximum displacement of a point of a wave from its rest position.
Time period
The time taken by a particle of medium to complete its one vibration is called the time period of the wave
Wavelength
distance covered by a full cycle of the wave, usually measured from peak to peak, or trough to trough.
Speed
The rate of change of position of an object in any direction
The wave equation?
V= f x L (wave speed= frequency x wave length)
How to work out the period of the wave?
1 / frequency
