P1.2 Flashcards
Density formula
Density = mass/volume
What is density?
Density tells you how much mass there is in a given volume
What state has the highest density
Solid
Why does solid have the highest density
Because there are more particles in a given volume than in a liquid or gas
Density does not only depend on the arrangement of particles but also….
…the mass of the particles
What is the units if density
Kg/cm3
What is the density of water (h20)
1000kg/cm3
What is the mass of 1 litre?
1kg
What is the volume of 1000 litres
1m3
What is the mass of 1 litre
1 kg
What is the mass of 1 ml
1 gram
What is the law of conservation of mass?
The mass of a substance stays the same throughout a physical change
What is heat?
- thermal energy
- amount of energy
What is temperature?
- the average kinetic energy of the particles
What is temperature measured in?
- Celsius
- kelvin
What is the difference between energy and temperature
- Energy depends on the mass of a substance (the larger the mass the more energy needed)
- temperature is not dependent on the mass
What happens when you heat something up
Heating can
- change the physical state
- make chemical reactions occur
- change the energy stored in the system
What happened when you heat something up
When you heat something up energy is transferred from a chemical store in fuel to the particles causing the particle to move faster or vibrate around increasing their kinetic energy which increases the temperature as temperature is the measure of average kinetic energy
