P10: Forces And Motion Flashcards
What will happen to a car if it is in equilibrium?
Stay still or continue at a constant velocity
What does force equal?
Mass X Acceleration
Calculate the force of an object that has a mass of 6.0kg and an acceleration of 3.0m/s
6 x 3 = 18N
What is inertia?
The tendancy for an object to stay at rest or continue at a constant motion
What is the difference between mass and weight?
Weight is the force acting on an object due to gravity, meassured in Newtons (N)
Mass is the quantity of matter in an object, meassured in kilograms (KG)
How do you calculate weight?
Mass X Acceleration due to gravity
A man has a mass of 90kg, what is his weight if the acceleration due to gravity is 10m/s?
90 x 10 = 900N
What is stopping distance?
Thinking distance + Braking distance
What is thinking distance?
The distance travelled between the driver realising they have to brake and actually braking
What is braking distance?
The distance taken to stop once the brakes are applied
What factors may affect the braking distance?
- If it is icy or wet
- If the car is broken or faulty
- The speed of the car
What is momentum?
A property of a moving object which depends on how much mass the object has and how fast it is moving
What is the equation for momentum?
Mass X Velocity
Calculate the momentum of an object with a mass of 50kg and a velocity of 2.5m/s?
50 x 2.5 = 125kgm/s
What is an elastic object?
An object that regainst its shape when the forces deforming it are removed.
