P10 Force and motion Flashcards
What is newon’s second law?
The acceleration of an object is proportional to the resultant force on the object, and inversely proportional to the mass of the object.
What is inertia?
The tendency of an object to stay at rest or to continue in uniform motion.
What happens if velocity and resultant force are in the same direction?
The object accelerates/the object’s acceleration is positive.
What happens if velocity and resultant force are in opposite directions?
The object decelerates/the object’s acceleration is negative.
What is the weight of an object?
The weight of an object is the force acting on an object due to gravity.
What is terminal velocity?
The terminal velocity of an object is the velocity it eventually reaches when its falling.
What happens when an object is moving at terminal velocity?
The resultant force on it is zero.
What happens when impact time is increased?
The force is reduced.
What defines an ‘elastic’ object?
An object that returns to it’s original shape after removing the force deforming it.
What is the extension of an object?
The difference between the new length and the original length of an object.
