P1 Waves Flashcards
what are the oscillations like in a transverse wave?
a transverse waves oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of travel.
give an example of a transverse and longnitudinal wave
all electromagnetic waves are transverse.also a mechanical wave can be transverse or longitudinal. a sound wave is longitudinal.
what are the oscillations like in a longitudinal wave?
the oscillations are parallel to the direction of travel
how do you work out the speed of a wave?
speed = frequency x wavelength
what is the speed of a wave when the frequency is 5 Hz and it has a wavelength of 2m ?
speed=frequency x wavelength = 5 x 2 = 10 m/s
what is the frequency of a wave?
the number of waves that pass through one point in one second.
what is refraction?
the change in direction of a light ray when it passes through a transparent substance that has a different density.
if the angle of incidence is 70 degrees, what is the angle of reflection?
70 degrees. angle of incidence = angle of reflection
what is diffraction?
diffraction is the spreading out of all waves, including light and sound, when they pass through a gap or round an obstacle.
the higher the frequency, the higher the _______ of a sound.
