P1: The physical environment Flashcards
The environment is said to constitute as __
“Life support system”
The basic components of the natural environment
- Atmosphere (air)
- Hydrosphere (water
- Lithosphere (soil)
- Biosphere (living components)
above the earth’s surface, extends up to a height of 20 kms above the equator. 8 kms over the pole. Upper extreme tempt may drop to 60 celsius.
The troposphere
Contains the ozone layer, 30 kms thick. The temperature may rise from -60 celsius to 0.
The Statosphere
Zone is characterized by gradual decline in temperature to about 90-degree celsius. 40 km thickness
The mesosphere
The constituents of this zone are in an ionized state
The thermosphere
Three types of rocks are found in the earth’s crust
- Igneius rocks
- Sedimentary rocks
- Metamorphic rocks
Formed by cooling and solidification of molten rock material called magma e.g. basalt
Igneous Rocks
Develop by gradual accumulation consolidation and hardening brought about by wind and water. Characterized by distinct sedimentary layers.
Sedimentary rocks
Results of a metamorphosis of igneous and sedimentary rocks due to intense heat and high pressure
Metamorphic rocks
Changes in the earth’s crust as a result of atmosphere and hydrosphere
weathering
Major agents responsible for this are water, air, oxygen-carbon dioxide. Slow and simple process
Chemical weathering
Brought by a mechanical process due to changes in temperature water and wind
Physical weathering
Caused by a number of organisms that aid in the disintegration of rocks.
Biological weathering
