P1 Revision Flashcards
What are the Properties of a solid?
They have a fixed shape and cannot flow and they cannot be compressed or squashed.
What are the Properties of a liquid?
They cannot be compressed or squashed and They flow and take the shape of their container.
What are the Properties of a gas?
They flow and completely fill their container and They can be compressed or squashed.
How are the particles arranged in a solid?
Close together and a regular pattern.
How are the particles arranged in a liquid?
Close together and a random arrangement
How are the particles arranged in a Gas?
Far apart and a random arrangement
What is conduction?
Heat is thermal energy. It can be transferred from one place to another by conduction.
What is a poor conductors called?
Insulators.
What is convection?
Liquids and gases are fluids because they can be made to flow. The particles in these fluids can move from place to place. Convection occurs when particles with a lot of heat energy in a liquid or gas move and take the place of particles with less heat energy.
What is are the 9 types of energy?
magnetic kinetic (movement energy) heat (thermal energy) light gravitational potential chemical sound electrical elastic potential nuclear.
What is the input and output energy in a light?
Input:
electrical energy
Output:
light energy and heat energy
What are Sankey diagrams?
Sankey diagrams summarise all the energy transfers taking place in a process. The thicker the line or arrow, the greater the amount of energy involved.
How can heat be transferred via radiation?
Heat can be transferred by infrared radiation. Unlike conduction and convection - which need particles - infrared radiation is a type of electromagnetic radiation that involves waves.
What is payback time?
Payback time is amount of time taken to get your money back.
What is the equitation for pay back time?
payback time (years) = cost of installation (£) ÷ savings per year in fuel costs (£)
