What do you use to test for sugars?
Benedict’s Solution.
What do you use to test for starch?
Iodine
What do you use to test for fats?
Ethanol and distilled water.
What do you use to test for proteins?
Biuret reagent
How do you test for fats?
Add ethanol and water to the substance, and shake. A white cloudy emulsion will form if lipids are present.
How do you test for sugars?
Add Benedict’s solution to the substance, and put in a water bath. The colour will change from blue to green to yellow to orange to brick red.
How do you test for starch?
Grind food into a powder with water, filter out the water, and add a drop of iodine on. Food containing the starch will turn a blue-black colour.
How do you test for proteins?
Put food in solution, add 1cm^3 of biuret solution to the food.
Describe the colour change of biuret solution.
Changes from blue to violet.
Describe the colour change of Benedict’s solution.
Blue, to green, yellow, orange to brick-red
Describe the colour change of iodine.
Orange brown to blue black.
Describe the colour change of ethanol.
No colour change. Cloudy emulsion forms.
