P1 Energy Resources and Their Uses (page 173) Flashcards
Energy resources both renewable and non-renewable are mostly used for what?
To generate electricity, and two other major uses are transport and heating.
Will Non-Renewable Energy Resources run out one day?
Yes
What are Non-renewable energy resourses?
Fossil Fuels and Nuclear Fuel (Uranium and Plutoium)
What are Fossil Fuels?
They are natural resources that form underground over millions of years, They are typically burnt to provide energy.
What are the three main fossil fuels?
Coal,
Oil
(natural) gas
These will all run out one day, They all do damage to the environment, but they provide most of our energy.
Will Renewable energy run out?
No, it will never run out.
Where do we get Renewable energy resources from?
The sun (solar)
Wind
Water Waves
Hydro-electricity
Bio-fuel
Tides
Geothermal
Why wont renewable energy resources never run out?
The energy can be renewed as it is used. Most of them do damage the environment, but in less nasty ways than non-renewables.
The trouble is they don’t provide much energy and some of them are unreliable because they depend on the weather.
Transport is one of the most obvious places where fuel is used, give some examples of the transports Non-Renewable Resources?
Petrol & Diesel - powered vehicles (including most cars) use fuel created from oil.
Coal is used in some old-fashioned steam trains to boil water to produce steam.
Give some examples for transports energy resources using ‘Renewable Energy Resources’
Vehicles that run on pure bio-fuel (page 176) or a mix of a bio-fuel and petrol or diesel. (only the bio fuel bit is renewable though).
Give some examples for heatings, Non-Renewable Resources?
Natural Gas - is the most widelyused fuel for heating homes in the UK. The gas is used to heating homes in the UK. The gas is used to heat water, which is then pumped into radiators throughout the home.
Doal is commonly burnt in fireplaces
Electric Heaters (sometimes called storage heaters), which use electricity generated from Non-Renewable energy resources.
Give some examples of heating using ‘Renewable Energy Resources’?
A geothermal (or ground source) heat pump uses geothermal energy resources to heat buildings (see page 174).
Solar water heaters work by using the sun to heat water which is then pumped into radiators in the building.
Burning bio-fuel or using electricity generated from renewable resources can also be used for heating
(you need to know the difference between the two different types of energy resources).
Write down whether each of the following are renewable or non-renewable energy resources (4 marks)
a) Tidal power
b) Natural Gas
c) Nuclear power
d) Bio-fuel
a) Tidal power = Renewable
b) Natural Gas = Non-Renewable
c) Nuclear power = Non-Renewable
d) Bio-fuel = Renewable
