P1 - Energy For The Home Flashcards
What is temperature?
Temperature is a measurement of hotness on an arbitrary scale.
What is heat?
A measurement of internal energy.
What is a thermogram?
A scale that uses colour to show temperature.
What is specific heat capacity?
The amount of energy required to raise the temperature of 1kg by 1C.
What is specific latent heat?
The energy needed to melt or boil 1kg of the material.
Why is there no change in temperature when a substance changes state?
Energy is needed to break the bonds that hold the molecules together.
What is payback time?
The time it takes to make back the money spent on an energy saving/producing device.
What is the frequency of a wave?
The number of complete waves passing a point in one second.
What is the wavelength of a wave?
The distance between two successive points on a wave having the same displacement and moving in the same direction.
What is the crest of a wave?
The highest point on a wave above its rest position.
What is the trough of a wave?
The lowest point in a wave below its rest position.
What is diffraction?
The spreading out of a wave as it passes through a gap.
What is total internal reflection?
When the angle of incidence is bigger than the critical angle.
What are the main features of laser light?
- it only has one single frequency
- it is in phase
- it shows low divergence
How much food can microwaves penetrate through?
Up to 1cm.
