P1- Energy Flashcards
What are the 8 energy stores?
1- Thermal energy 2- Kinetic energy 3- Gravitational Potential 4- Elastic Potential 5- Chemical energy 6- Magnetic energy 7- Electrostatic energy 8- Nuclear Energy
What are the two types of energy?
Potential energy and kinetic energy.
What are the 4 ways energy is transferred?
1) Mechanically (by a force doing work)
2) Electrically (work done by moving charges)
3) By Heating
4) By radiation (light or sound)
What is a system?
A system is a single object or group of objects.
What is transferred when a system changes and where can it be transferred?
Energy is transferred when a system changes.
It can be transferred into or away from the system, between different objects in the system or between the different types of energy stores.
What are closed systems?
Closed systems are systems where matter and energy can enter or leave.
What does net change mean?
Net change is the TOTAL change
What is the net change in the total energy of a closed system?
It’s always zero.
Example of boiling water in a kettle.
1) What is the system?
2) Where is the energy being transferred from and to, what
energy store?
3) What happens to the temperature of the water?
1) The water
2) Energy is transferred to the water (from the kettles
heating element) by heating, into the waters thermal
energy store.
3) The temperature of the water rises.
What is work done?
Work done is energy transferred.
What is another term for energy transferred?
Work done
How can work be done?
- When a current flows
- By a force moving an object
Example- someone throwing a ball upwards.
1) What does the energy transfer from and to?
2) What force does work?
1) Energy transfer from the chemical energy store (of the
person’s arm) to the kinetic energy store of the ball and
arm.
2) The initial force by the person.
