P1/Energy Flashcards
what is specific heat capacity?
the amount of energy required to raise the temperature of one kilogram of the substances by one degree celsius
what is power?
the rate at which energy is transferred or the rate at which work is done
what is 1 watt?
energy transfer of 1 joule per second
how can unwanted energy transfers be reduced?
by lubrication or insulation
what is the law of conservation of energy?
energy can be transferred usefully, stored or dissipated, but cannot be created or destroyed
what is wasted energy?
when energy is stored is less useful ways, e.g sound or heat that is dissipated to the environment
how can unwanted energy transfers be reduced?
lubrication (oil) or thermal insulation (loft insulation)
what does it mean when a material has a high thermal conductivity?
the higher the rate of energy transfer by conduction
what affects the rate of cooling of a building?
thickness of the walls and their thermal conductivity
what are the main energy resources available for use on earth?
fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas) nuclear fuel biofuel wind hydro-electricity geothermal the tides the sun and water waves
what is a renewable energy resource?
one that is being (or can be) replenished as it is used
what are energy resources used for?
transport, electricity generation and heating
