To provide equal opportunity for all pupils regardless of social class or background.

- TAILORED EDUCATION TO INDIVIDUAL ABILITIES:
secondary grammar schools, modern schools and technical schools
-MERITOCRACY:
system designed to provide separate but equal schooling through the 11+ exam which would allocate pupils to their appropriate school.

Evaluation of the Tripartite System
A
- The TS reproduced gender inequalities by requiring girls to gain higher marks in the 11+ exam
- Legitimated inequality from the ideology that ability is inborn and that it can be measured by a single test
- Led to regional inequalities as there were disparities in the number of grammar places available
- The schools did not have ‘parity of esteem’
