P1- Conservation And Dissipation Of Energy Flashcards
What is an energy store?
An energy store is a way energy is kept in an object. Examples: chemical energy (batteries), kinetic energy (moving car), gravitational potential energy (an object high up).
What does the law of conservation of energy say?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred from one store to another.
What is work done?
Work done is when a force moves an object.
Formula: Work done = Force × Distance (moved in the direction of the force)
What is gravitational potential energy?
Energy an object has because it is high up.
Formula: GPE = mass × gravitational field strength × height.
What is kinetic energy?
Energy of a moving object.
Formula: KE = 0.5 × mass × (speed)²
What is elastic potential energy?
Energy stored when an object is stretched or compressed (like a spring)
What is energy dissipation?
When useful energy spreads out and becomes less useful (often as heat)
What is the job of electrical appliances?
They transfer electrical energy into other forms like heat, light, or movement
What is power?
The rate of transferring energy
Formula: power = energy transferred ÷ time
What is efficiency?
How good a device is at transferring energy usefully
Formula: Efficiency =(useful energy output / total energy input) x 100%
