11
Q

describe + explain simple distillation

A

simple distillation is used to separate liquid from a solution. It works as the liquid is heated to a gas and is then cooled down quickly to make it liquid (only works if the liquids have very different boiling points)

12
Q

Describe and explain crystallisation

A

crystallisation is the process where a liquid forms into a structure where all atoms or molecules are organized highly into a crystal

13
Q

describe and explain evaporation

A

evaporation is used to separate a solid that has been dissolved in a solvent from the solvent, the solution is heated until all the solvent evaporates; the solids stay.

14
Q

describe and explain fractional distillation

A

fractional distillation is where a mixture is separated into different parts called fractions by heating it at the bottom and cooling it at the top

15
Q

Describe and explain filtration?

A

Filtration is used to separate an insoluble solid from a liquid. A beaker is filled with an insoluble solid and liquid and another is filled with a filter funnel and filter paper inside, the filter paper catches the solid, but the liquid can slip through.

16
Q

What does insoluble mean?

A

incapable of being dissolved

17
Q

is sand soluble?

A

No, it is not

18
Q

is oil soluble?

A

No, it floats at the top of water

19
Q

Describe and explain chromatography

A

chromatography is used to separate mixtures of soluble substances. They tend to be coloured substances such as inks, dyes etc. To do it water and ethanol solution is heated. A mixture is put on a piece of paper. When the paper is lowered into the solvent some dye spreads up the paper. The paper absorbs the solvent. Separating the spot mixture into a few spots so a single colour can be extracted potentially.

20
Q

What is a separating funnel?

A

A funnel used to separate two liquids that won’t mix together
