P1 Flashcards
What is a system
A word for a single object or a group of objects
What is Energy
The capacity to do work
What is work done
Force ( N ) x Distance ( M ) = work done ( J ), work is only when something moves
What is kinetic energy
Anything that is moving, it is dependent on the objects mass and speed, 1/2 x mass x speed = kinetic energy
What is gravitational potential energy
Anything that is raised has gravitational potential energy, it is dependent on the object mass height and strength, mass x gravity x height
What is elastic potential energy
1/2 x spring constant x extension squared, The energy stored in an elastic object when work is done on the object
What is the conservation of energy principal
Energy can only be transfeered between stires, it cannot be destroyed.
What is dissipated energy
Wasted energy from a transfer between stores
What is power
The rate of energy transfer or the rate of doing work,
Energy transferred / time , or Work done / time
What is conduction
The process whereby Brighton particles transfer energy to neighbouring particles
What is convection
Where energetic particles move away from hotter to cooler regions
Name some stores
thermal energy stores, kinetic energy stores, gravitational potential energy stores, elastic potential energy stores, chemical energy stores, magnetic energy stores, electrostatic energy stores, nuclear energy stores
What is one watt equal to
1 J/s
How do you calculate energy efficiency
Useful energy transferred / by total energy supplied
What is a closed system
An object that no energy transfers take place out of or into the energy stores of the system
