P+E Case Studies Flashcards
Tropical monsoon climate. Mewat, India.
-Low rainfall drought prone area
-Mean temperature increased by 0.18degrees during monsoon szn every 10 years
-
Mewat india adaptation.
-heat tolerant varieties of crops
-soil management strategies
-underground pipes for drip irrigation
-crop diversification
Results
-heat tolerant crops increased yields by 12-18%
-irrigation increased water saving by 45%
Polar tundra climate (sampi region) climate.
- vegetation is sparse except in the forested southern portion
-Very low temperatures,permafrost
Sampi region adaptation
-Reindeers fully utilised for food, skin and everything possible.
-continuous moving of reindeer to conserve environment
-International organisations support indigenous people
Tropical red latosol location
5 degrees north and south of equator. Tropical equatorial rainforests
Tropical red latosol properties
-High iron and aluminum making it red
-mainly infertile
-thin but fertile upper layer of humus, follow by a thick infertile 2nd layer due to leaching from rainfall. 3rd layer is bedrock
Tropical red latosol reasons for composition.
-abundance of plants and animals creates a fertile upper layer of humus. Leaf litter quickly decomposes due the the rapid decomposition, rather than staying in soil.
-high precip leaches 2nd layer
-year round plant growth gives a thick o horizon.
Tropical red latosol human activity
-Large proportion of global population life on these soil zones.
-Latosols are poor for agriculture as they are infertile.
-deforestation increased leaching
-farming has been forced to take place on red latosols. When land is cleared soil is degraded
Podzols location
-Cool temperature climates in the northern hemisphere
-precip>evap
-coniferous woodland or heather moorland
Podzols properties
-Able to occur on almost any material, generally form from sands or sandstones
-Poor for agriculture as they are sandy, low levels of nutrients
-Low ph
Podzols reasons for composition
-O horizon is a layer of needles from coniferous trees or heather leaf litter, below this is a narrow acidic a horizon.
-water leaches nutrients from A horizon
-acidic so water in the soil can dissolve into iron and aluminum. Leaching of these creates a pale E horizon.
-Well developed podzols an “iron’ pan forms in the B horizon. Layer of iron.
Podzols human activity
-Livestock can be grazed, arable farming is difficult
-Grouse shooting UK
-deforestation is high as coniferous trees grow well
-‘iron’ pan can prevent water drainage, making the soil vulnerable to water logging
Examples of ETM LIC and HIC
LIC- Haiti stage 2
Age of receding pandemics.
Life expectancy around 60
HIC- UK stage 4
Age of delayed degenerative diseases
Life expectancy over 80
Glasgow life expectancy compared to uk
76 years, UK almost 81.
What is the glasgow effect?
Unexplained poor health of residents in the region. Poverty is high but doesn’t explain the life expectancy.
