P&D Flashcards
Can batteries be portable and static
yes they can
What are the uses of batteries
Torches
Watches
Hearing aids
Cars/lorries
What 2 categories can batteries be split into?
Primary
Secondary
What are the 4 main characteristics of a primary battery?
Not rechargeable
Known as ‘dry cells’
Once discharged they are thrown away
Normally small
What are the 4 main characteristics of secondary batteries?
Rechargeable
Know as ‘wet cells’
Require specialist recharging equipment
Variety of sizes (AAA up to VERY large)
What is the voltage difference of a charge and discharge cell?
discharged: 1.75
charged 2.1
What is the difference between charged and discharged per cell
0.35 V
What is RICE?
Rationalised Internal Communications Equipment
7 types of breakers in distribution system?
Supply breaker Interconnector breaker Shore supply/ship alongside breaker Electric motor breaker Motor generator feeder breaker Motor generator supply breaker Diesel generator alternative supply breaker
what is an edp?
electrical distribution panel
what are the different types of EDP connected to a type 23
Type 1
Type 2
Type 3
What are the two sources of 450V if the motor generators are lost?
Converted diesel generator
Emergency generator
Inside the panel on a converted diesel engine there is a switch with four positions, what are these switches for?
440V generator test
440V generator
600V generator
600V generator test
What does the switchboard supply?
Steering motors High pressure salt water pumps Surgery/sickbay Smoke clearance exhaust fans Portable pump sockets
Type 3 EDP has what?
Has a single input
Multiple circuits feeding off the input
Is a shedable EDP
9 basic components of the electric motor system
Air filter Cooling fans Yoke Compole Main pole Armature Commutator Brush gear
6 stages of electrical propulsion motor cooling
- Cool air is drawn through a filter into the motor
- This is done by 2 forced ventilation fans
- The air is then forced over the main poles, armature, commutator and brush gear
- The cool air absorbs the heat generated in the motor
- It is exhausted from the motor at the commutator end
- The air is then forced through a water cooled heat exchanger into the engine room
what does IEP stand for
Integrated Electric Propulsion system
