  • was put forward as a result of the events in Greece and turkey after WW2
  • civil war broke out after Greek communists and monarchists competed for power
  • therefore, Truman provided financial aid to the pro-western greek government and turkey, resulting in a communist defeat
  • this American intervention was known as the Truman doctrine
