A
- the US policy of actively seeking to prevent the spread of communism around the world.

A
- Stalin’s aim was to spread communism and extend the borders of the Soviet Union; the West saw this as a direct threat and responded with the policy of containment.

- was put forward as a result of the events in Greece and turkey after WW2
- civil war broke out after Greek communists and monarchists competed for power
- therefore, Truman provided financial aid to the pro-western greek government and turkey, resulting in a communist defeat
- this American intervention was known as the Truman doctrine
