P. Chordata - General Information Flashcards
What types of chordates are ectotherms?
Fish, Amphibians, and reptiles
Define ectotherms:
An ectotherms is animal whose body temperature is determined by outside temperatures/sources.
What is a poikilotherm and what category does it fit under (ecto or endotherm)?
A poikilotherm means to be variable in body temperature and it is a type of ectotherm.
What is the disadvantage to being an ectotherm?
Their activity is highly dependent on ambient (surrounding) temperatures.
What is the advantage of being an ectotherm vs being and endotherm?
With an ectotherm, the advantage is the using less energy. For an endotherm, their advantage is their body temperature being independent of ambient temperatures.
What is an endotherm?
Endotherms are animals whose body tempertaure is determined from internal sources.
How do endotherms regulate their body heat and retain energy for heat?
By breaking down food and using it for body heat.
What is a homeotherm and what category does it fit under (ecto or endotherm)?
A homeotherm is an animal whose body temperature is NOT variable but regulated and stable. Homeotherms are a type of endotherm.
What is the disadvantage of being a endotherm?
Endotherms spend more time maintaining homeostasis.
Anapsid, synapsid, and diapsid refer to what type of lineage?
Amniote lineages!
Anapsid, synapsid, and diapsid are an indication of what feature?
The number of openings on the side of the skull for an amniote.
How many openings does an anapsid animal have and what is an example of one?
An example of an anapsid is a turtle and it has no opening on the side of the skull.
How many openings does a synapsid have an an example of one?
A synapsid has one opening on the side of their skull.
Mammals are synapids.
How many openings does a diapsid animal have and what is an example of one?
Diapsid animals have two openings on the left and right side of their skull.
Snakes, lizards, dinosaurs, and birds.
