What are the common oxidation states of group 13?
+3, +1
What are the common oxidation states of group 14?
+4, +2, -4
What are the common oxidation states of group 15?
+5, +3, -3
What are the common oxidation states of group 16?
+6, +4, +2, -2
What are the common oxidation states of group 17?
+7, +5, +3, +1, -1
Which groups can act as lewis acids and why?
Group 13 compounds, group 16 and 17 compounds if they contain elements of the third period or lower.
What groups can act as Lewis bases and why? What determines the strength?
Groups 15, 16, 17 compounds have lone pairs. Strength of base depends on the type of orbital the electron pair is in.
Are the oxides of electropositive metals basic or acidic?
Basic, dissolve in water to give alkaline solutions.
Are non-metals basic or acidic?
Acidic
Is Al2O3 acidic or basic?
Amphoteric
How does the metallic character change across the period?
Decreases
How does the oxidation state change across a period?
Increases
How does the ionic character of the oxides and halides change across the period?
Decreases
How does the acidic character of the oxides change across the period?
Increases
