When are the navigation lights tested and by who
Lights are to be tested daily one hour before sunset, normally by the duty ET(ME)
Who’s permission must be gained before testing lights
Permission to switch lights on must be obtained from the OOW/OOD
Where are the navigation lights controlled from and switched on and off
The Navigation Lights Control Panel (NLCP) is located on the bridge, the Versatile Console System (VCS) 428 is located on the Quartermaster’s console and the VCS 161 is located in the operations room
List all statutory navigation lights, their colours and location
Side lights - Port (red)
Starboard (left)
The mast steaming light forward and aft (white)
And stern lights (white)
List all combinations of special operation lights
Not-Under-Command (NUC) - 2 steady red lights port and 2 steady red lights starboard, mounted vertically on the main mast
Replenishment-At-Sea (RAS) - 2 steady red lights port and 2 steady red lights starboard. A single white light each side between red lights, vertically mounted on the mainmast
Man-Over-Board (MOB) - 2 flashing red lights port 2 flashing red lights starboard, vertically mounted on the mainmast
Where are special operation lights switched on from
These are operated by the VCS 428 unit
List all miscellaneous lights, their colours and location
Anchor lights - fitted on top of the FWD and AFT jackstaffs and white in colour
Masthead Obstruction Lights - Red in colour and mounted port and starboard at the top of the mainmast
How are the emergency navigation lights fed
Emergency navigation lights are fixed in positions adjacent to their normal counterparts and are supplied via fixed wiring by two series-connected 12 volt batteries
Why is it important to switch on the emergency NUC/RAS lights before being hoisted
If they are hoisted then plugged in, an induced current may be present due to radar and radio aerial interference
