P 6 Flashcards
What is the definiton of density ?
The density of a substance is defined as its mass per unit volume .
What is the equation for density ?
Mass/volume
A wooden post has a volume of 0.025 cm cubed and a mass of 20kg . Calculate the density in kg/m cubed .
Density = mass / volume
20kg/0.025m cubed = 80 kg / m cubed
How do you calculate the mass of density ?
You can calculate the mass of a liquid by substracting the mass of the empty beaker from the total mass of the beaker and the liquid .
What do you have to do for every density test ?
For each of the tests , measure the mass and the volume of the object as explained . Then use the equation density = mass / volume .
What are the three states of matter ?
Solid , liquid and gas
Do solid’s have flow ?
No
Does a liquid and gas have flow ?
Yes
Do solid’s have a fixed shape ?
Yes
Does a liquid and gas fill a container ?
Yes
Is the volume of a solid fixed ?
Yes
Is the volume of a liquid fixed ?
Yes
When a substance changes state , what happens to the number of particles?
They stay the same
How do you change the state from a solid to a gas ?
Sublimation
How do change the state from a gas to a solid ?
Cooling it
How do you get from a liquid into a gas ?
Boiling
How do you go from a gas to a liquid ?
Condensation
What happens when the temprature of a substance is increased ?
The particles in the substance move faster .
Does pure ice is heated and melts , does its temprature change ?
No it stays at 0 degrees .
What is latent heat ?
The energy transferred to a substance when it changes state .
What is fusion ?
Fusion is sometimes used to describe melting because different solids can be joined , or fused together when they melt .
What is internal energy ?
The energy stored by the particles of a substance .
How do you work out the internal energy of particles ?
The kinetic energy + potential energy
What is the equation used to find the specific latent heat of fusion ?
Energy/mass
What two things happen when a substance is heated ?
If its temprature rises, the kinetic energy of its particles
If it melts or boils , the potential energy of particles increases
What is the pressure of a gas on a surface ?
The total force exerted on a unit area of the surface .
What is the Brownian motion ?
The random motion of tiny particles in a fluid .
