Ozymandias Flashcards
“Look on my works ye mighty and despair”
Ozymandias expects his empire and kingdom to survive (dramatic irony as his presence fades over time)
“The lone and level sand stretch far away”
- The level of sands cover the statue of Ozymandias. Could also represent Ozymandias’ legecy being forgotten
- the statue is far away that it stands insignificant and unrecognised
“Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand”
The word desert suggests lifelessness and a lack of culture. Ozymandias statue resides in the desert showing that he is forgotten
“Half sunk, a shatter’d visage lies, whose frown”
The image of a shattered visage creates irony. How Ozymandias believed strongly in his power and his superiority to present his greatness in that statue is now destroyed and forgotten. Like his influence
“My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings”
Ozymandias’ pride and arrogance led to his perception of himself being above everybody else. He seems himself as Omnipotent
Irony to the reader as the traveler only knows him through a report
