Ozone Story - More atmosphere, Radicals Flashcards
what do radicals contain ?
an unpaired electron
what does tropospheric ozone cause?
its toxic, so leads to respiratory problems
what area of the atmosphere is toxic and leads to respiratory issues?
tropospheric ozone
Why is stratospheric ozone vital for life?
It protects humans by absorbing high energy UV radiation, which would otherwise cause skin cancer.
What are the two reactions for formation of ozone?
02 —hv—> 0. + 0.
O. + O2 —-> 03
what are the three stages of a chain reaction?
- initiation
- propagation
- termination
when is heterolytic fission most likely to happen?
when the bond is polar. (ionisation), ions are formed.
when is homolytic fission most likely to happen?
when the bond contains no or very little polarity, then forms radicals.
what is homolytic fission?
when one electron can sit on one atom, and the other electron can sit on the other atom.
Cl–Cl —-hv—–> Clx + Cl.
