Oxytocin MOA
- Naturally occurring posterior pituitary hormone
a. Stimulates contraction of uterine smooth muscle
b. Stimulated mammary gland smooth muscle resulting in lactation
c. Increases renal, coronary, and cerebral blood flow
Oxytocin Indications
- Postpartum hemorrhage after infant and placental delivery that is not controlled by fundal massage or breast feeding
- May be used to induce labor in a hospital setting only
Oxytocin Contraindications
Following a C-Section
Oxytocin Maternal Side Effects
Cardiovascular: dysrhythmias, chest pain, HTN
Neurological: seizures
Respiratory: dyspnea
Gastrointestinal: N/V
Genitourinary: Sever uterine cramping, uterine rupture
Oxytocin Fetal Side Effects
Cardiovascular: bradycardia, ectopic rhythms
Neurological: intracranial hemorrhage
Respiratory: hypoxia, asphyxia
Oxytocin Precautions
Ensure the baby and the placenta have been delivered prior to administration to prevent placental retention
Oxytocin Interactions
Use with other vasopressors can increase the risk of HTN

IVPB, IM
Oxytocin Onset and Duration of Action
Onset is immediate with IVPB admin , 3-7 minutes IM. Both with unknown durations
