Oxygenation Physiology Flashcards
What is V/Q mismatch
Inadequate ventilation but normal perfusion
This is also referred to as shunt, commonly caused by some sort of obstruction in alveoli
Examples of this are pulm-edema, COPD, drowning, etc.
What is dead space ventilation?
The opposite of V/Q mismatch; adequate ventilation but inadequate perfusion
What is the 50:50 club?
PaCo2 ≥ 50
AND
PaO2 ≤ 50
Refers to acute obstructive pathology that requires PPV to resolve
What does high lactate levels indicate
Metabolic stress
NOT an indicator of hypoxia, sepsis, or any other pathology
What are the steps of aerobic glycolysis
- Glucose is broken down to two pyruvate acid
- Krebs Cycle
- Oxidative phosphorylation
Define PaO2
Partial pressure of oxygen in plasma
Define PO2
Partial pressure of oxygen in environment
Define PAO2
Partial pressure of oxygen in alveoli
Define SaO2
Amount of hemoglobin in blood that are saturated
Define SpO2
Total saturation of of O2 bound to Hgb
Define SvO2
Mixed venous O2 saturation measured by a pulmonary artery catheter
Define ScvO2
Central venous O2 sat
Note that central line measurements are 5% to 8% higher
Define CaO2
Arterial O2 content bound to Hgb
Define DO2
Total delivery of O2 over the course of a minute
When confronted with a pt in acute hypoxia, what is the first major question to ask?
Is this an oxygenation problem or a deadspace issue
