Oxygenation Important Terms Flashcards
acute coronary syndrome (ACS)
sudden decrease in coronary blood flow
afterload
resistance to left ventricular ejection - the work the heart must overcome to fully eject blood from the left ventricle
angina pectoris
imbalance between myocardial oxygen supply and demand
bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP)
ventilator support used to treat patients with obstructive sleep apnea, congestive heart failure, and preterm infants with underdeveloped lungs
bronchoscopy
medical procedure using camera to look at lungs
capnography
provides instant information about how effectively CO2 is produced by cellular metabolism, transported through the vascular system, and eliminated by pulmonary system
cardiac output
volume of blood expelled by the ventricles of the heart
blood ejected at each beat x number of beats in period used for computation
chest tube
catheter inserted through thorax into chest cavity to remove air or fluid
cheyne-stroke respiration
occurs when there is decreased blood flow or injury to the brainstem
compliance
amount of stretch that you have on your lungs
continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP)
ventilatory support used to treat patients with obstructive sleep apnea, congestive heart failure, and preterm infants with underdeveloped lungs
diaphragmatic breathing
respiration in which the abdomen moves out while the diaphragm descends on inspiration
dyspnea
difficulty breathing (subjective and objective)
electrocardiogram (ECG)
graphic record of the electrical activity of the myocardium
hematemesis
vomiting blood, means GI bleed
