Oxygen Transport By Blood Flashcards
What is cyanosis?
Decreased oxygen content of blood which causes a blue colour to skin.
Where is peripheral cyanosis seen?
The toes, fingers, ear lobes.
What causes peripheral cyanosis?
Sluggish blood flow.
Where is central cyanosis seen?
Oral mucosa.
What causes central cyanosis?
Caused by respiratory failure or shunt.
How much oxygen per minute is taken up by tissues from arterial blood?
250ml/min.
What is the difference between partial pressure in gas and solution?
No difference, they are both equal.
How is oxygen carried in blood?
By haemoglobin as oxyhemoglobin.
What causes the Bohr shift?
An increase in CO2, temperature or hydrogen ions in blood.
What is polycythaemia?
When hematocrit is more than 55% due to an increase in erythrocyte number or decrease in plasma volume.
What is hypoxia?
Deficiency in the amount of oxygen reaching tissues.
