Oxygen Therapy Flashcards
how many mL’s of oxygen is needed to require humidification?
anything greater than 4mL/min
how often should you check cannula mask ?
every 8 hours to ensure patency of cannula and oxygen flow
what is the technique for inserting at the oropharyngeal airway? and why would you use it?
measure from corner of mouth to angle of jaw just below ear. You’d use to keep patient from choking on tongue
what rate can a high-flow nasal cannula deliver? and what can it deliver
can deliver heated and humidified air/oxygen up to 60L/min
what is the selection of oxygen delivery system dependent on?
- level of oxygen support the pt needs
- severity of hypoxia
- disease process
what are the two types of incentive spirometry?
flow oriented and volume oriented incentive spirometry
what is flow oriented incentive spirometry?
one or more plastic chambers
-its a slow, steady, expansion of lung
what is volume oriented incentive spirometry?
bellows that pt must rise
-pt can achieve a known inspiratory volume, measure it with each breath
oxygen delivery devices can be….? what are they
high flow or low flow
high: provide total inspired air indicated for patients who require a constant and precise amount of oxygen
low: pt breathes some room air along with the oxygen
examples of high flow oxygen delivery devices?
venturi mask, large volume nebulizer, blender masks, high flow nasal cannula
examples of low flow oxygen delivery devices?
nasal cannula, simple face mask, non rebreather and partial rebreather
which way should cannula point in nose?
tips of nasal cannula should point downward inside nostrils
why would you choose a face mask over a nasal cannula?
if pt requires more than 5L of oxygen
how much oxygen can be delivered through a low flow nasal cannula?
1-6L/min
how much oxygen can a simple face mask deliver?
6-12L/min
