Q

The human brain cannot function for longer than ______minutes without an adequate oxygen supply. It cannot be stored in the body and therefore the supply from the external world must be constant.

Q

In most healthcare settings, oxygen is piped into patient rooms, and other areas of the facility where patients may be

Q

Oxygen tanks

A

-Compressed oxygen is available in tanks of varying sizes.
-Most common size is the E cylinder.
-Tanks will have two regulator valves – one indicates how much oxygen is in the tank, and the other measures the rate of flow

Q

Nasal cannula

A

Most commonly used,
Oxygen is delivered in liters per minute – 1 to 4 LPM is usually prescribed for adults

Q

Face mask

A

-Used at rates no lower than 5 LPM as this rate is needed to flush the carbon dioxide from the mask.
-There are a variety of types – nonbreather, partial rebreather, and Venturi.

16
Q

excessive oxygen when administered to pts with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

A

could depress the respiratory drive and the pt may stop breathing.

17
Q

Safe placement of oxygen tanks

A

-Always stored upright in a storage rack, mobile O2 transport unit, or in a holder specifically designed for tank on bed, stretcher or wheelchair.
-Never placed on patient’s bed, stretcher
-Never placed directly on patient or between their legs.

Use of correct storage devices protects/prevents the regulator of the tank from accidently becoming compromised rendering the tank a dangerous projectile!

18
Q

Risk of Fire

A

-Oxygen is a component of the triad of fire!
-Patients receiving oxygen should never smoke.
-Care should be taken when using surgical prepping agents as some can be flammable.
-Avoid any activities that could provoke sparks.
