oxygen therapy Flashcards
oxygen
is an essential physiological need for survival.
The human brain cannot function for longer than ______minutes without an adequate oxygen supply. It cannot be stored in the body and therefore the supply from the external world must be constant.
4-5
A pulse oximeter is frequently used to monitor
he oxygen saturation of blood hemoglobin (SaO2)
When a human being’s oxygen supply is interrupted or interfered with in any matter,
it is an emergency situation which must be dealt with quickly to prevent a life threatening situation.
The major supply of oxygen is carried in
chemical combination by the hemoglobin in the blood.
Normal oxygen values are
95-100%, values of less than 85% are an indication that the body is not receiving adequate oxygenation
Oxygen is administered by artificial means when
the patient cannot obtain adequate amounts from the atmosphere to support the needs of the body.
Settings that do not have the luxury of piped oxygen,
will utilize oxygen that is compressed and supplied in tanks.
In most healthcare settings, oxygen is piped into patient rooms, and other areas of the facility where patients may be
ex: operating rooms, procedural areas and imaging suites.
Oxygen tanks
-Compressed oxygen is available in tanks of varying sizes.
-Most common size is the E cylinder.
-Tanks will have two regulator valves – one indicates how much oxygen is in the tank, and the other measures the rate of flow
Nasal cannula
Most commonly used,
Oxygen is delivered in liters per minute – 1 to 4 LPM is usually prescribed for adults
Face mask
-Used at rates no lower than 5 LPM as this rate is needed to flush the carbon dioxide from the mask.
-There are a variety of types – nonbreather, partial rebreather, and Venturi.
oxygen is
Considered a medication and must be ordered by a physician.
It is ____ okay to remove a pt from O2 therapy.
never
Excessive amounts of oxygen may
produce toxic effects on the lungs and central nervous system or may depress ventilation
