Oxygen Administration Flashcards
two types of artificial airway tubes
Tracheostomy tube
Nasotracheal tube
Hypoxemia
An inadequate supply of oxygen in the arterial
blood
Hypoxia
An inadequate supply of oxygen in the tissue or cell
Pulse Oximetry (what, regular level)
Measurement of the oxygen saturation (Sp02) of hemoglobin in arterial blood
Should be SPO2 of 95-100%
Dyspnea
difficulty breathing
Respiration
Exchange of gases between the atmosphere, blood
and cells
Ventilation
Inspiration
Expiration
principle muscle of
respiration
diaphragm
breath in= contracts (down)
breath out = relaxes (up)
inspiration accessory muscles (5)
Scalene
Sternocleidomastoid
Upper Trapezius
Pectoralis Major
Erector Spinae
expiration accessory muscles (4)
Rectus Abdominis
Transverse Abdominis
Internal and External Oblique
Pectoralis Major
common medical conditions of hypoxemia
Asthma, heart failure, pneumonia, pulmonary emboli
(in arterial blood)
common medical conditions of hypoxia
Airway obstruction, injury, blood flow due to the circulatory
system
(to tissue/cell)
oxygen toxicity
High levels of oxygen provided for more than 24
hours usually results in some lung damage
COPD patients
Some patients when treated with excessive amounts of oxygen become hypercapnic (elevated
levels of carbon dioxide in the blood)
Signs of Respiratory Distress (main 3)
Pulse oximetry (SP02) measures less than 90%
Respiratory rate: Less than 8 or greater than 30
Bluish color (cyanosis) seen around the mouth, on the inside of the lips, or on the fingernails; gray skin
